Memorial in Jewelry

The incredible artist Mareen Alburg Duncker created this beautiful personalized memorial for Ruth:

This jewelry piece in the project was designed for the “Statements in Schmuck gegen Antisemitismus und Fremdenfeindlichkeit” (Statements in Jewelry Against Anti-Semitism and Xenophobia) exhibit based on Ruth Mühlmann’s story.

The artist is Mareen Alburg Duncker.

Reprinted with permission of the artist.

The Heimat-Stipendium #2, Kunststiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, and the Gedenkstätte Für Opfer der NS “Euthanasie” in Bernburg collaborated on this art project.  Mareen’s commemorative jewelry was a reminder of Ruth, who often worked with handicrafts at school at Bernburg and who was loved by her family.  A pendant in the shape of a heart was worked in a filigree technique; very thin silver wire was knotted, carefully rolled and wrapped into the shapes shown. These forms were then placed in a frame and soldered on from behind. Two other versions of the small heart that fit within the larger one were made by Mareen and given to me and to my aunt, (Ruth’s niece) Helen Knuppel Foster.

The exhibition of this jewelry is on permanent exhibition in a display case at the Gedenkstätte Für Opfer der NS “Euthanasie'' in Bernburg.
